Maybe it was someone you knew; a friend, a family member or a co-worker. Perhaps, you saw a banner, ad or a pop-up site on your computer. Maybe someone sent you an email. Pop-ups, neon lights, flashing banners all screamed big, BIG, BIG $$MONEY$$ awaits YOU!
You were excited and signed up right then. If there was a product involved, you likely received a kit with some of the products and pamphlets. If you signed up for something online, maybe there was no product, and you just clicked “Agree,” and moved on to find your treasure.
Then and there, your life as a network marketer began. Your dreams were big; your hopes high; you were excited and invincible! Perhaps you even saw yourself as the very first to achieve the

You did exactly as your upline told you to do: made a list of your family and every person you’d known since preschool, then called them up and wowed them with your incredible presentation. Not one of them wanted to join. Fine, no problem; people with no vision have to be drug along anyway, and you definitely want people who are driven to achieve their dreams. Besides, they’ll change their minds when they see how much money you’re making, and come begging YOU to join!
Next came the internet. WOW! Now this was a mecca of hungry people who’d be dying for your opportunity. People on the internet are so much more business savvy, right? You set up email accounts, signed up with social networks, sent out emails to everyone announcing your arrival, joined forums where you posted your opportunity, set up flashy banners, clicked on traffic sites for hours on end and so on.
Perhaps you even spent money buying leads, which didn’t actually “lead” anywhere. You call your upline who says, “Stay positive! Make more calls! Listen to tapes/cds/mp3s! Get motivated! Buy more leads!” That’s assuming your upline is even available for you to speak with anymore.
Fast forward a few months: family and friends are now screening their phone calls and avoiding you entirely. Co-workers refuse to make eye contact and whisper as you walk past; there might be talk of an intervention on your behalf to pull you out of the cult you’ve joined.
Piles of tapes/cds, literature and motivational books litter the corner of your home office space. Product is overflowing in your cabinets. Now you’re tired because you can’t sleep; can’t answer the phone because it might be bill collectors; and, left wondering, “What happened? I did everything I was supposed to do!”
